Join wineLAIR manager and DipWSET recipient Rigel Kaufman as we try three exciting wines from Australia's most up-and-coming winemaking region.
Australia has long been known (and sometimes vilified) for big, robust wines from Shiraz, but the emphasis in recent years has been towards nuance, balance, and freshness. Tasmania has been at the forefront of the movement, with many producers sourcing grapes from the cooler-climate island for blending, and others making single-vineyard wines showcasing the unique terroir.
The results have been spectacular. James Haillday, Australia's lead wine critic, has given the highest scores ever to recent vintages of Tasmanian wine, characterizing them as some of the best terroir for cool-climate styles in the country.
Whether it's traditional method sparkling wine, fresh, racy Riesling, Grand Cru-esque Chardonnay, or brooding, complex Pinot Noir, Tasmania has a lot of wine to offer to all palates, and at unbelievable bargains.
