Long thought too cold to grow grapes, England has roared onto the global market as a producer of exceptional champagne-style sparkling wines. Until very recently, these wines were extremely small production and limited only to distribution within the UK. However, these wines are now available in small quantities in DC, and they're absolutely delicious.

On the southern coast of the UK, in parts of Sussex and Kent, the cold climate and chalky soils are reminiscent of Chablis—perfect for growing grapes with expressive aromatics and vibrant acidity. And while demand for Champagne is at an all-time high (with a price tag to match), the lesser-known English sparkling continues to be aged longer and longer, and now uses a higher percentage of reserve wines on average than their French counterparts.

Make no mistake, these aren't Champagne stand-ins, these are serious high-caliber sparkling wines that outscore almost everything in their price range. If you value tension, acidity, richness, or any combination of the three, there is an English sparkling for you.
